Mark Jaremko is a photographer living in the San Francisco bay area. His interest in photography started during his childhood in Toronto, when his father gave him his first Kodak Brownie Hawkeye camera, followed by a Pentax Spotmatic.
After graduating college with a degree in Electrical Engineering, Mark went to work for Microsoft designing many of the digital imaging features in Microsoft Office. After more than a decade of designing software to help people use photography, Mark yearned to go back to the creative process of photography itself. In November 2004, during one midnight photo session, he came up with the concept for his Nightscape series and has been shooting Landscapes at night ever since.
Mark earned a spot in the Artspan Selection 2007 portfolio contest, was selected as a finalist to the Photolucida 2008 Critical Mass competition, and exhibited at the Art of Photography 2008 in San Diego. His work is in the collection of the Museum Fine Arts, Houston, and on permanent exhibit with DarknessDarkness (2008), an exhibit of contemporary American night photography, and has contributed to articles in various publications, including PDN and both contributed and is featured in Night & Low Light Photography (Jill Waterman - PDN Pros Series, Amphoto Books, Watson Guptill Publishers, New York, NY. 2008).
Mark works in Large Format Film and high resolution digital format, printing his own work using an archival pigment ink printing process. He still occasionally shoots with his father’s Pentax Spotmatic

I photograph at night. For the past four years, my focus has been on capturing urban landscapes over water photographed during a full moon, all taken with very long exposures. I am fascinated with the sky, the sea and the human presence on the horizon. The horizon can be peaceful, secluded and meditative. It can also reveal things that are distant, cold and artificial. The peaceful and secluded nature of the night draws me to scenes evoking tranquility, loneliness and isolation. My goal has always been to capture these moods in my photographs along with the finest distant details.
